Not every plan turns out the way it should, just like not every meal turns out as you intended. Many times, this can cause disappointment, stress, anxiety and irritation which often leads to, you can probably guess this, the urge to assuage the bump in the road with whatever vice is available. I have quite a few, so I didn't know which direction to run to yesterday - pantry, refrigerator or liquor cabinet (a bit early for this though....), when I found out my car would be in the shop through Monday, baseball practice was canceled, my kids didn't have their summer reading packets and I scheduled 4 assignments to come due in the next 4 days (what was I thinking???????). Immediately I craved carbohydrates, but I curbed this urge with a mozzarella (string cheese) stick -- my usual breakfast fare.
Next, I came up with a plan, borrowed a van and took off with 7 kids to Bouncertown. I ordered 2 pizzas for the kids and requested that one piece be covered in mushrooms because this, in my humble opinion, would give me a vegetable serving (which is not my favorite food group), dairy and grain! Plus, if you haven't tried the mushroom pizza at Bouncertown -- it is the business! I slowly ate my prize while the kids bounced for 4 hours! Truth be told, I could have used a little exercise yesterday, but kids over 10 are not allowed in the bounce houses.
My big hurrah was going to the ball field, ordering Matthew pizza sticks and not partaking in any of them. Honestly, he refused to share and I was OK with that!
So, the moral to my day is just like we have situational contingency plans, we should have food contingency plans. If we get caught inside "the" box, we need to be open to looking at options not originally in the master plan. Pizza wasn't high on my food list, but adding those little canned mushrooms to it made it just a wee bit more nutritionally palatable! HA ;-). Don't you agree!!!????

Allison - Glad to see you made a great choice with the "veggie" pizza. Life is all about choices. During one of my "many" dieting experiences, my coach once told me to always ask myself "is eating that going to get you where you want to be". That's always stuck with me. Although, I've now always stuck with it.
I'm pleased to say yesterday was a decent day for me with regard to eating. However, I didn't get one drop of exercise in. Consumed by work, sitting at my desk from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM is brutal on the backside for sure. I'm looking forward to some physical activity this morning.
My meals yesterday consisted of: shredded wheat for breakfast, spinach salad with chicken for lunch, and WW mini cheeseburger (yes, I am a creature of habit with food), and baked salmon for dinner with a side of brown rice, and sauteed spinach with onions and mushrooms. I did have one small glass of red wine, and a 100 calorie cookie snack mix for my late night snack. Overall a decent day. Not a lot of snacking throughout. I would highly recommend GrapeNuts for breakfast if you like them. Your mouth wears out from chewing them before your stomach feels full! P.S. did you really post your blog at 4:00 AM! I thought I was the only one that couldn't sleep last night.
I also like the food contingency idea. I need to figure out how to apply it. Yesterday (Wednesday) was not a good choices day for me. My husband came home from Italy bearing chocolate gifts and offering to take everyone out to dinner. At Applebee's we got a sampler appetizer tray and I ate enough BBQ wings, mozz sticks and chips/spinach dip to BE my dinner. Then I ate a Weight Watchers meal. Kind of too late, don't you think? Then I rationalized eating the Toblerone white chocolate with honey and almonds bar by focusing my attention on the fact that Scott's feelings would be hurt if I didn't eat it. The truth is he wouldn't have cared, really. I have asked him not to bring me chocolate from his trips, but he knows how much I love chocolate and struggle to resist. Aargh. At least I exercised today!! Tomorrow we may be going to King's Island, weather permitting. We'll see how creative I can get with food contingency plans, then with fattening park food! No exercise will happen except walking all over the park all day. Thank goodness I can try again tomorrow! :)
Wow ladies! I'm seeing a lot of leafy vegetables (yes, spinach dip counts ;-) and thoughtful food choices or recognition. One thing I have found from all of this is I am thinking about what I am eating and not just plucking snacks out of the bin. My goodness! How many people can turn their backs on Italian chocolate and a welcome home meal.
Gina, I need to have you cook meals for me and freeze pack them ;-). HA!!!! That would keep me on track for sure. I might even try the grape nuts for a late breakfast. I am not a big breakfast eater, so it would be hard for me to stomach that in the early morning (early for me is 8:00 or after).
Nope, I didn't post at 4 a.m. I was snug as a bug in a rug in my bed. Interesting!
Happy Friday ;-).
One other thought:
Chicken wings are fabulously yummy and nutritional evil! Hideous fat content.
No doubt! Is it better if they are baked? I got one set baked and the other????? If not baked, possibly fried?
